I am working on implementing a new system at our plant that needs to send emails and text messages to on call employees. The controller i will be using is an Allen Bradley 1769-L18ER-BB1B. I have found some good info on the knowledge base on how to set up the program to accomplish this. The question that i have is the network side of this. What steps need to be taken to set up the network to accomplish this?

Hi,
I just did a project to send email messages. The following link is from Google to send a message using SMTP without authentication. The catch is that you must send only to a google account. However you can then use the forward email filters to send the message on.

This can be accomplished without to much interference on your network. You only need access to the internet.
Most PLC's do not handle authentication well. If you need to use SSL, then I would look at stunnel.

Hope this helps,
