I have a customer request that reads (slightly edited)

Smart Motor Contactor
  • This will monitor incoming power for irregularities in voltage and voltage differences between phases
  • This will monitor pump motor amperage during the cycle to determine if the piston seal is failing in any of the actuators and also check for pump efficiency losses.

Does Allen Bradley / Rockwell make such a motor starter. I know we have these items in Eaton's new line of circuit breakers.

I know I can do this with other components but wondering if AB has a ready made solution for this.

Thanks

As others said E300 overload relays give a lot of diagnostics and I have used them in many projects but it's the wrong solution for what you are trying to do. It will handle the phase and voltage monitoring fine and they give precise current measurements as they use Rogowski coils however doing seal wear and other predictive functions is very hard to do with measuring current.

You would be much better served and much more precise to measure the true power consumption of the motor.

Load Controls hardware is the best in the business for these type applications.

The E300 does true power monitoring (shaft kW). But you are right, that is a better indicator of what’s going on with the load than looking at just current. Current will fluctuate with changes in line voltage, kW remains tied to the shaft load regardless of what’s going on with the incoming line. I use kW readings from E300s together with flow meters to monitor pump performance for predictive maintenance. Flow and kW should track consistently so if the kW increases but flow does not, it means the bearings are wearing out.
